DOGGIE DO-INGS
Updated May 11, 2009

What Do You Do if You See Someone Abusing a Dog? One Englewood Unleashed member researched the answer after witnessing disturbing "disciplinary" behavior at the Canine Corral. The answer she received from Englewood Parks & Recreation is to phone Englewood dispatch at 303-762-2438 and they can get an officer to the park. Englewood Animal Control is 303-761-7410, but you may have to leave a message. Note the person and dog's description, car and license plate, and get the names and phone numbers of others who witnessed the abuse. Don't hesitate to use your mobile phone's camera or video capabilities to document what you observe because abuse is very hard to prove without documentation.

Coyote Kills Dog Near Canine Corral on Tues, May 5, 2009. At about 3:45 PM, a coyote emerged from a wooded area north of Pirate's Cove Water Park and killed an off-leash chihuahua near its owner. The coyote then approached another adult walking in the Belleview Park area. Law enforcement and the Division of Wildlife were on the scene for approximately 3 hours, where they cleared the Canine Corral and Belleview Park as they searched for the possibly pregnant coyote. Read the City of Englewood's news statement and recommendations if a coyote approaches you.

Leash Your Dog for Safety from Coyotes & to Prevent Hazards. In light of the recent coyote incident, leashing your dog until safely inside the Canine Corral makes even more sense. Also, no one wants their dog to run across the parking lot in front of and behind cars, to become an obstacle to cyclists, to cause runners and walkers to trip, or to simply approach park and trail users who simply don't want to be near dogs. Your dog could get hurt. Moreover, police cruisers have been spotted more often in the parking lot. Violators can receive a ticket of $75.00 per dog. Need a quality leash that's cheaper than a ticket? Check out one of Englewood Unleashed's avid supporters, Bold Lead Designs, for a lifetime-guaranteed, hand-crafted, leather leash.

Holes Are a Hazard: Prevent Your Dog From Digging. From our "email bag" comes this story: "I've been a member of Englewood Unleashed for almost 3 years now. I'm the proud owner of Kekoa...The purpose of my e-mail is to notify you of a serious problem we have at Jason Park. In the past at Canine Corral and Jason Park, I've witnessed owners allowing their dogs to dig holes...Koa was running at Jason Park last week and stepped into a hole. Koa came up lame and was holding her foot up...after an hour and a half at the vet, we learned that she had a torn ACL in her left rear knee. The injury is severe and will require a TPOL surgery [that] will cost me almost $4000.00." We hate to see anyone get hurt, so please take note: Owners are responsible for any hazard created by their dog including holes. Please prevent your dog from digging holes as they are potential hazards for humans and dogs. And please fill any holes you see for safety's sake. Need help training your dog not to dig? Try Love My Dog Training, a proud supporter of Englewood Unleashed.

Bark Mulch: Dogs Ask For It By Name. Thanks to past president, Tavis Hanna, as well as David Lee and Jerrel Black from the City of Englewood, for getting the donation of bark mulch from Fort Logan to the Canine Corral. The value of the mulch and the cost of equipment and manpower to transport it probably topped $10,000! We are watching to see how this bark mulch works out and if it does, we may get some more at various times of year. Our board member and landscaping professional Jenn Enger researched whether the bark mulch is okay for dogs. Her research, along with Elizabeth Bublitz of Pawfriendly Landscapes, assured us to go ahead with the bark mulch. The downside is that dog poop blends in with the mulch, so keep an eye on your dog and pick up any extras you encounter! On another note, be sure to avoid cocoa mulch in your own yard. It can contain the lethal ingredient theobromine which is found in chocolate and can literally kill your dog.

Chili Cook-off: What a Turn Out! Thanks to so many terrific chili entries, volunteers, businesses, and most importantly "chili eaters" on a cool and overcast April Saturday, this year's Chili Cook-off was better than ever, practically doubling the money we raised over last year. Funds will be used to continue with our efforts to make Englewood a canine-friendly community through the maintenance and improvement of the Canine Corral and other off-leash areas. Thank you to all!
